Overview

Turning Compassion Into Action

Let Us Breathe works on the frontlines of human–elephant conflict in Sri Lanka, delivering practical, compassionate solutions that protect both lives and landscapes. Our projects combine mobile medical care, emergency rescue, education, and long-term community partnerships.

Every program is designed to answer a real need in the field — whether it is treating an injured elephant, helping a family stay safe at night, or teaching children to love and respect wildlife. Below you can explore our main projects and see how they fit together to create lasting change.

Core Programs

How Let Us Breathe Makes an Impact

Mobile Elephant Hospitals

Our fully equipped wildlife ambulances travel deep into the field to treat injured, sick, or trapped elephants. Each mobile unit is staffed by trained veterinarians and support teams, able to respond quickly when every minute matters.

  • On-site diagnosis and emergency treatment
  • Transport support for critical cases
  • Follow-up visits to monitor recovery
Emergency Rescue Units

Our rapid-response rescue teams work alongside wildlife authorities and local residents to safely handle conflict situations from elephants stuck in wells or canals to dangerous encounters near homes and farms.

  • 24/7 emergency hotline support
  • Rescue and relocation operations
  • Training for local rangers and volunteers
Community Awareness

We run village-level awareness programs that share simple, practical steps families can take to prevent conflict and stay safe, while still respecting elephants and their right to move through traditional routes.

  • Village meetings and awareness camps
  • Safe farming and fencing practices
  • Storytelling, discussions, and Q&A sessions
Youth Education Campaigns

Our school programs inspire the next generation to protect wildlife and the environment. Through creative workshops, activities, and field visits, children learn that elephants are not enemies but guardians of our forests.

  • School talks and interactive sessions
  • Educational booklets and activity packs
  • Student ambassador programs
Habitat Restoration

To reduce conflict in the long term, we help restore natural corridors and feeding grounds so elephants can travel safely without entering villages and farms.

  • Reforestation and planting native species
  • Identifying and protecting movement corridors
  • Working with landowners and state agencies
Research & Partnerships

Data and collaboration are at the heart of our work. We partner with universities, conservation groups, and local authorities to study conflict patterns and design better interventions.

  • Field data collection and mapping
  • Joint studies with researchers
  • Long-term conservation planning
Field Story

How a Typical Rescue Operation Works

  1. Emergency Call Received
A villager, wildlife officer, or local leader alerts our team about an injured or trapped elephant.
  2. Rapid Assessment
The Mobile Elephant Hospital and Rescue Unit review photos, location, and risk level before deploying.
  3. On-site Response
Our vets stabilize the elephant while the rescue team manages crowds and coordinates with local authorities.
  4. Treatment & Monitoring
The elephant receives immediate care and is either treated on-site or transported if needed. Follow-up visits ensure recovery.
  5. Community Dialogue
After the rescue, we talk with the community about what happened and how to avoid similar incidents in the future.
